Viking Wedding Guide

Our Viking weddings follow tradition: authentic rituals, Norse decor, Viking officiant, and everything you need to celebrate your love story in the old ways of the North. Operating in Norway, the land of Vikings, has allowed us to help many couples create the Viking wedding of their dreams.

Based in Aurland, Norway, we specialize in authentic Viking weddings that capture the spirit of Norse tradition and the beauty of the fjords. Whether you dream of a full-day celebration, a half-day experience, a simple ceremony, or an intimate mountaintop elopement, we take care of every detail — from ceremony design, décor, and venue setup to traditional rituals, feasting, and music. Our team also provides expert guidance on authentic Viking attire to help you look and feel the part.

For couples arriving by cruise ship, we offer Viking wedding experiences in Flåm, Olden, and Ålesund, making it easy to include your Norse celebration as part of your journey.

Creating your authentic Viking wedding

Mythic locations and spiritual atmosphere

We carefully select mythical and breathtaking locations, primarily outdoors by the fjords, but also offer unique indoor venues, ensuring your ceremony is as unforgettable as your love story.

We can offer Viking wedding even if you travel by cruise ship: in Flåm, Olden and Ålesund.

We choose mythical locations, mainly outdoors, by the stunning fjords, or indoors. We have several suggestions for indoor ceremony, such as tree house or stave church.

The outdoor setting (mountain, forest) or the rustic indoor space (wooden beams, stone walls) can offer a unique perspective to your wedding.

We add fire pits, candles, torches, and natural decor like furs, wildflowers, shields, and runes.

Viking attire

As a bride you can choose a flowy dress (in earthy tones), leather belt, fur, and braided hair with beads or floral crown.

A Viking groom typically wears tunic, leather vest, fur cloak, arm bracers, and braided beard/hair.

You can also ask your guests to have a Norse-inspired attire (simple tunics, natural fabrics, earthy colours).

A white linen shirt paired with a wool vest or a tweed jacket offers warmth and elegance, perfect for the cooler mountain weather.

Dark trousers or chinos are a great choice, ensuring they stay comfortable and stylish.

We can provide Viking drinking horns, shields, sword, blowing horn, and rabbit shawls.

To add a touch of local charm, consider incorporating Norwegian-inspired details, like brooches, pins or jewellery.

Ceremony rituals

For the Viking ceremony, we create a sacred circle marked on the ground with wood, ropes, flowers and runes. This is a deeply symbolic space that represents unity, protection, and the connection between the couple, the gods, and nature.

Traditionally it serves as a holy boundary where the ceremony takes place. Once the couple and Viking officiant step inside, they are spiritually separated from the outside world, entering a realm of sacred intention.

Within this circle, the couple gets married in the ancient way of the Norse. A handfasting ritual (tying of hands), oath exchange, gift exchange and blessings from the elements are performed. It symbolizes the cycle of life, love, and eternity, as the circle has no beginning or end. The space is also believed to honor the Norse gods such as Freyja, Frigg, and Thor, inviting their protection and blessings over the union. You can personalize your wedding by bringing specific offerings to the Gods (usually mead or ale).

The bridal couple will also exchange gifts: swords, rings (or traditional Viking arm rings), and vows. Swords have long played an important role in the weddings of the Vikings. The exchange of swords represents the unifying of families.

In the sagas and poems of the Norse peoples, the ring is the ultimate symbol of a bond, and oaths were sworn on rings. Wedding rings are forged by the fires of dedication and love and cannot be easily destroyed. The circle of each ring represents the unending compassion the bride and groom have for one another. And finally, each ring is an objective statement of the commitment and love that this couple has for each other, placed on their bodies for all the world to see.

The ceremony is ended by a Drinking Horn Offering in which we thank the Old Gods for their blessings over the wedding. Skål!

A feast worthy of Valhalla

A Viking feast is a celebration of abundance, unity, and tradition.

For lunch and dinner, we serve hearty roasted meats, freshly baked bread, rich cheeses, root vegetables, and warming stews, all inspired by authentic Norse cuisine.

Guests enjoy family-style dining, sharing generous platters at long wooden tables — just as Viking clans once did.

We raise drinking horns to toast love and kinship.

We capture the spirit of a true Viking feast beneath the open sky with a firepit burning, or in a rustic fjord barn.

Entertainment and Viking games

To bring the spirit of the Viking Age to life, we offer authentic Norse entertainment that delights and immerses guests in the ancient traditions of the North.

We can provide live Viking music played on folk instruments and drums, filling the air with powerful rhythms and haunting melodies.

Gather around for storytelling sessions that share timeless tales of love, bravery, and legendary warriors.

We can organize traditional Viking games such as axe-throwing, or grip test (with a rope) perfect for friendly competition and laughter.

As night falls, gather around the fire for a good laugh, and some storytelling, ending the night in a proper Viking way.

You are welcome to personalize your wedding by creating your own games, exchanging gifts with all the guests, or hiring a traditional Norwegian singer or Sami singer.

Viking favours and invitations

Add a personal touch to your Viking celebration by gifting your guests meaningful wedding favors that reflect Norse tradition — such as rune stones, mini drinking horns, leather bracelets, or handmade candles and soaps crafted with natural ingredients.

Your wedding invitations can also carry the spirit of the North, designed with Viking symbols, rune inscriptions, or an aged parchment look to set the tone from the very beginning.

With our guidance on attire, rituals, and décor, every detail will transport you and your guests into a living Norse saga — a day of love, legend, and lasting memories.
